Latina Public Service Academy

The Los Angeles County is seeking for Latinas to become leaders in their community. They are recruiting for the 2020 Los Angeles cohort of the Latina Public Service Academy.

The Academy is a FREE leadership program for Latinas in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades with priority given to Latinas in LAUSD/LA County schools.

The Program: The Latina Public Service Academy provides government and public policy training and instruction to high school Latinas from low-income communities. The curriculum includes skills training as well as campaign and organizing modules to prepare them to run for elective office, or to work for elected or appointed officials.

If you identify as Latina, reside in Los Angeles County, are in the 9th , 10th , 11th or 12th grade, and have an interest in public service and leadership, then you are eligible for the Latina Public Service Academy! The program is completely free but requires full participation in the three full-day workshops.

Eligibility requirements
  • Enrolled in 9 th , 10 th , 11 th , or 12 th grade this year
  • Preference is given to students who are low-income and reside in the communities of: South LA, Boyle Heights/East LA, Pico Union/Westlake, Northeast San Fernando Valley, Southeast Cities of LA County, LAUSD regular public schools and charter schools.
  • At least one parent is of Latino/Hispanic heritage
  • At least a 2.0 GPA. (Exceptions can be made for promising candidates)
  • Submit a complete application via email, per the instructions, by April 17, 2020 at 11:59pm PST (see attachment)
  • Must be able to attend the following Academy dates:

Tuesday, April 28, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Saturday, May 2, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Light breakfast and lunch provided.

Apply for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) Youth Advisory Council

Do you want to get involved in your community and make a difference while having your voice heard? If you are concerned with public health issues affecting our community and you live in the LA County area then this program is for you. 

LA County is Seeking New Members for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) Youth Advisory Council

Characteristics desired in each applicant: dedicated, enthusiastic, and motivated. This group of leaders will identify, discuss, and inform DPH leadership about public health solutions that can improve the health and well-being of their peers and communities. 

The DPH Youth Advisory Council members serve a minimum of one-year term with an option to serve a second term.  Council members are paid for their time and efforts through a fee-for-service by being paid for each activity you participate in/complete. This includes training and skills development; outreach and education; communication and media; research and evaluation; and monthly Youth Advisory Council meetings. 

Interested candidates must complete this application and email it to [email protected] by March 31, 2020.

This program is for any student interested in Math, Science, Engineering and Technology. 

SMASH x UCLA

Are you interested in pursuing a STEM major?

The SMASH program is a free STEM-focused program geared toward high-achieving, high-potential, economically disadvantaged, high school students who are typically underrepresented in STEM fields. Through participation in the SMASH Program students will be better prepared to pursue and successfully graduate in STEM based majors.

Girls Sound Engineering Program

An 8 week, once a week after school program focused on introducing students to Digital Audio Workstations, signal flow, properties of sound, beat making, sound editing/manipulation, mic placement techniques. 

Classes will be held once a week for two hours (4p-6p) starting in mid-February, will include a tour of Capitol Records, in partnership with UMG, and will culminate with a share-out of individual projects and feedback from an industry professional. Additionally, students will be receiving a certificate of completion.
