Standards Based Grading

During the 2014 – 15 school year, ESAT will continue to use Standards Based Grading. This system is designed to make use best educational practices in as far as providing a more effective, success-oriented picture of how our students are performing. ESAT uses a common, 4-point grading scale with final grades being determined by redefined summative assessments.

Standards Based Grading

Students will earn letter grades for their courses based on scores (1.0 – 4.0) earned on the graded assessments. These grades correlate with the CST proficiency bands (Advanced, Proficient, etc.). Each assignment or assessment will be connected to certain standards, with each standard earning its own unique score for that particular assignment or assessment. Over the course of a semester, students are given multiple opportunities to demonstrate their level of proficiency on any given standard. All scores for a standard will be averaged into a standard score and these standards scores will be averaged together to calculate the final grade for the course.

Life/ Work Skills

Classroom activities that provide feedback on a standard or activities that are not assessing proficiency on a standard are not included in the final grade. They may be tracked as progress towards the standard, and the students’ effort, participation and/ or completion of the work can be included as part of the students’ Life/ Work Skills grade. This grade will appear on their report card, but does not count towards G.P.A. or graduation requirements. Homework, in class assignments, or other activities that are designed as practice for feedback and are not included in the final grade can be included as part of the Life/ Work Skills grade.
